Abstract
This study examines Imam Khomeini’s psychological operations during the Iran–Iraq War across its four distinct phases. Data were collected through a content analysis of Imam Khomeini’s war-related messages. The central hypothesis posits that his psychological operations during each phase—(1) the pre-war period, (2) from the outbreak of the war to the liberation of Khorramshahr, (3) from the liberation of Khorramshahr to the acceptance of the ceasefire, and (4) the post-war period—were aligned with the social realities of Iranian society and the conditions on the battlefield. The findings reveal a significant relationship between the themes of Imam Khomeini’s messages and the psychological management of both society and the battlefield. During the first phase, the messages emphasized political awareness and motivation, whereas emotional and motivational themes predominated during the second phase. The third phase focused on the rational persuasion of Iranian forces and psychological operations directed at the enemy. In the fourth phase, the primary emphasis shifted toward calming society in response to post-war social conditions. The study concludes that the alignment between Imam Khomeini’s messages and the realities of society and the battlefield was a key factor in the effectiveness of his psychological operations and their profound impact on both public morale and the overall war effort.
