A Reflection upon Tradition and Traditionalism and Criticism of the West from the View of Dr. Seyed Hossein Nasr

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to review the ideas of Dr. Seyed Hossein Nasr on tradition and traditionalism and the criticism of the west. Tradition in the view of Dr. Nasr means a set of principles descended from the higher world. They are considered as a special manifestation of the divine essence and are used for special humans during different time periods and circumstances. There is no change or transformation in them as they always have been and will remain the same. They are not restricted or conditioned to a certain time and place. They are neither eastern, nor western. Tradition is simultaneously the truth and the presence. Nasr criticizes western culture and civilization and believes that the traditional world with all its aspects is a defendable system and that modernity is the biggest disaster inflicted on humans in the recent century. He maintains that the only solution to solve this problem is to resort to eternal wisdom. He is a representative of a religious and traditionalist group of thinkers who do not want to surrender in front of the idea of modernity and secularism. Nasr who is certain about his religious and mystical thought, from the outset chose the duty of resisting against the instructions that challenge Islam.
